Elaina J. Hamilton | My Sigma Legacy

My mother (Ellen Hilton Hamilton) and I on my induction day.
My cousin (Erica Bailey) and I.
My sister (Jameil Weldon) and I.

As a proud legacy member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., I am honored to carry forward the tradition and values established by those who paved the way before me. That includes my mother. My mother joined as a charter member of Zeta Xi at Hampton University in 1975. I have vivid memories of my mom’s induction pillow that made many moves with us, an endless amount of “aunts” (some who went on to become godmothers), and the renewed excitement and affiliation when both my sister and myself joined as undergraduates at Hampton University and UNC-Greensboro, respectively.

Being part of a legacy within this esteemed sisterhood means more than just sharing a common bond; it signifies a commitment to upholding the principles of sisterhood, scholarship, and service that define our organization. My journey as a legacy member is a testament to the enduring legacy of Sigma Gamma Rho, and I am dedicated to contributing to its ongoing impact on our communities and the lives of those we serve. I do this in memory of my mother, Ellen Hamilton, who passed away on August 30, 2023.

In addition to being my mother’s legacy, I am my sister’s legacy. My sister, Jameil Weldon, was inducted spring 2002 at Hampton University into the Zeta Xi Chapter. My cousin is our legacy. My cousin, Erica Bailey, was inducted – 2011 – into the Eta Sigma Chapter in Atlanta, Georgia.

Together, we continue to uplift, empower, and inspire, ensuring that the legacy of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. remains vibrant and meaningful for generations to come.
